Preparing for the Layup: Sanding the Wings to Perfection

With the wings and tail surfaces cut and shaped, the next crucial step was preparing them for the carbon fiber layup. To ensure a smooth and successful process, each piece was carefully sanded to eliminate imperfections and create an even surface. Foam putty was applied to fill minor gaps or blemishes left by the 4-axis CNC hotwire cutter, followed by a final sanding to achieve the desired finish. The detailed surface preparation ensured that the surfaces were not only aesthetically appealing but also suited for creating a high-quality carbon fiber layup.

Key Achievements:

  • Sanded and refined foam cores to achieve smooth, even surfaces.
  • Improved layup quality by optimizing bonding surface conditions.
  • Delivered a clean, consistent finish to support structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
